The vacation-home sector in the United States is bigger than most analysts -- and subsequently, most home builders -- believe, according to results of a survey conducted in fall 2002 by the National Association of Realtors. Ownership was fueled in part by low mortgage rates.

The typical second-home owner is 61 years old, earns a median income of $76,900, is married, and purchased the home for recreational use.

The biggest home builder in the state of Texas has made a move to increase its coverage to Texas's Rio Grande Valley in the current low mortgage rate environment.

KB Home is slated to open a Texas Valley division to serve thousands of first-time and first-move-up buyers in the region. The homes will range in price from $75,000 to $125,000. KB Home currently has operating divisions in Dallas, Houston, Austin, Laredo, and San Antonio.
