Cementing its position in the Southeast, KB Home has purchased one of the area's largest privately owned home builders: Colony Homes. In 2001, KB acquired Jacksonville-Fla.-based Trademark Home Builders.

In the next three years, a union mortgage initiative -- currently operating in more than 20 U.S. cities -- is expected to generate 10,000 loans with a total volume of $1.2 billion nationwide.

Never underestimate what a dinner conversation might produce. Tom Bradbury's decision to sell Colony Homes to KB Home's CEO Bruce Karatz began like so many other deals, as a casual relationship.

That dinner, at last year's Pacific Coast Builders Conference, led to a flurry of cross-country meetings and a deal Karatz had been coveting for a long time -- one that would finally pave the way for KB to enter Atlanta in the currently low mortgage environment.
