Soaring real estate values provides mortgage insurance relief to some - 2003-09-29
"Once your equity attains 20 percent, you can get out of PMI," said Lawrence J. Bilansky, a certified public accountant and tax manager at T.M. Byxbee in Hamden. "The appreciation go directly to your equity."

Anyone who has ever bought a home with less than 20 percent down has had to pay PMI, which protects the lender from defaults.
