Housing, consumer debt and the next financial meltdown - 2004-01-18
No party goes on forever. US, UK and Australian house prices have jumped to ridiculous levels, so has consumer debt. Equities are overpriced, so standby for a real financial crash. Phil Thompson reports.

Consumers that see their spending power cut by higher mortgage rates will have to stop spending and that is bad for the real economy. They are also less likely to borrow more on credit cards or to take personal loans.

How can I liberate my wife from liability? - 2004-01-18
Q: I have been laid off. I have used about $30,000 from a few credit cards. I am struggling to pay the banks the minimum every month and it is a matter of time before my money runs out.

My present house, a condo unit, is registered under both our names. I have been using my Central Provident Fund (CPF) savings to pay the mortgage. Would it be advisable for me to withdraw her name as an owner since she does not contribute money?
