U.S. mortgage rates same on Friday - 2004-01-23
The average rate on a 30-year U.S. mortgage with no upfront points was the same on Friday, leaving the 30-year rate at 5-7/8 percent. If the market on Monday continues in its current direction, rates may rise.

The 30-year mortgage rate with one upfront point was unchanged at 5-5/8 percent.

Regions, Union Planters declare merger plans - 2004-01-23
Regions Financial Corp. and Union Planters Corp. have reached an agreement to merge in a $6 billion deal that creates a Southeastern banking powerhouse.

Morgan Keegan's brokerage operations, acquired by Regions in 2001, and the combined mortgage business, will be headquartered in Memphis.

The combination of our two companies will create a new regional force in the banking and financial services industry and further our respective strategic objectives.
