Mortgage debt blurs hopes of retirement - 2004-01-25
Q: A situation is building for my parents. They do not have retirement savings and qualify for Social Security payments of only approximately $800 a month when they retire.

They should pay off their $25,000 in credit-card debt because it costs far more than their savings can earn. After that, they should consider paying off their home mortgage for the same reason.

A mortgage is a huge commitment - for most of us the biggest one we'll ever make. So it might come as a shock to learn that we may not have the mortgage that suits us best, but the one that suits our mortgage broker.
