Bankruptcy courts clamping down - 2004-01-04
As bankruptcy caseloads increase in Colorado and across the nation, courts are squeezing more cash from debtors who once might have escaped paying their debts.

Bob, 55 and his wife, 50, racked up the bills, plus bank loans, to continue making mortgage and other payments. Each had experienced multiple layoffs and extended periods of unemployment.

30-Year Loan Rates Finishes Year at 5.85% - 2004-01-04
Rates on 30-year and 15-year mortgages moved up this week, ending a three-week streak in which these rates had fallen.

Even with the uptick, rates are still sufficiently low to keep the housing market healthy, economists said.

The average rate on 30-year mortgages this week was 5.85 percent, up from 5.81 percent last week, Freddie Mac said in its weekly nationwide survey of mortgage rates.
