Fannie Mae eases mortgage debt buying in January - 2004-02-17
Fannie Mae, the biggest buyer of U.S. mortgages, said on Tuesday its investment portfolio shrank for the fourth consecutive month in January, in part because mortgage securities it acquires have become expensive.

The housing giant buys mortgage loans and bonds pooling mortgage loans. This is a key source of profit for the company, which also sells guarantees for home loans to mortgage lenders.
