Little interest in low mortgage rates: Why? - 2004-02-22
Interest rates decreased again last week -- close to their more-than-40-year lows -- yet even those rock-bottom rates have failed to make mortgages attractive enough for some borrowers.

These borrowers have been keeping their payments extremely low by taking out interest-only mortgages, a hot product popping up just about everywhere. With these loans, the concept of the home as a place to build equity and force yourself to save is, well, so yesterday.

Group works on multifamily project - 2004-02-22
Hammering away at plywood to help build the walls of his new home, 15-year-old Alfredo Maldonado of San Diego could only dream of having his own room.

The rest of the mortgage payments are kept low by ties the organization forms with private and public donors. Currently the organization is building and placing county families in Escondido because of land made available by the city.
