Deducting mortgage interest isn't needed - 2004-02-07
Q: I am 85. Three years ago, I sold my home of 53 years and purchased a simple condo. I got a mortgage for about 50 percent of the purchase price. For the year 2003, I paid about $6,800 interest.

If I don't report this to the IRS, will I be in trouble?

A: I've never yet heard of the IRS prosecuting a taxpayer for failure to deduct itemized mortgage interest and property tax deductions.

Cleveland can renew high-cost mortgage-loan law - 2004-02-07
The fight over mortgage lending legislation continues its seesaw ride in Cleveland.

The 8th Ohio District Court of Appeals has ruled that the city can reinstate its 1½-year-old law restricting high-cost home loans.

The city can now enforce the law pending appeal, City Council spokeswoman Maxine Greer said Friday.
