Lenders prompted to offer all mortgage deals to all people - 2004-03-13
Cheap mortgage deals that go after first-time buyers and borrowers who change lenders could disappear if reforms proposed in a new Treasury-commissioned report get the go-ahead.

The Miles report on mortgage lending, commissioned a year ago by Gordon Brown, yesterday recommended that lenders should be required to offer existing customers the same deals as new borrowers.

The mortgage broking industry is in need of quick reform to protect consumers from unscrupulous operators charging huge commission and fees, according to finance experts.

Hidden fees, poor advice and conflicts of interest are some of the allegations directed towards mortgage brokers in what experts say is a largely unregulated industry.
