Firing at Mortgage Giants Freddie and Fannie - 2004-03-13
Mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac got hit with another round of unfavorable attention this week. Treasury Secretary John Snow fired the opening shot Tuesday, declaring that the administration didn't consider these companies to be too big to fail and that the widespread perception that the government backs these entities is mistaken.

Minorities less inclined to get best mortgage rates - 2004-03-13
Nashville area minority homeowners looking to refinance mortgage loans in 2002 were more likely to deal with sub-prime lenders — companies that usually charge higher rates.

The trend was similar for home purchase loans, according to data from the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now of Washington, an advocate for low-to-moderate income people.
