Habitat puts ‘sweat equity’ into family’s new home - 2004-03-14
Karen Salomon is on the driveway of her future home, her clothes full of dust. A small army of volunteers was inside, mudding the newly drywalled innards.

Salomon will have to pay back an interest-free mortgage and is expected to donate 400 hours of labor before she moves in to her new, three-bedroom, 26,000 square-foot abode.

Comparing the pros and cons of renting vs. buying homes - 2004-03-14
Whether to rent a home or to buy one? There are arguments for both. Homeowners can choose to paint their walls bright orange and no landlord can tell them no. They can take income-tax deductions for the mortgage interest and property taxes they pay. And, of course, they might make a profit when they sell.

Renters, on the other hand, don't have to deal with headaches like fixing a broken water heater - maintenance and repairs are the landlord's problems.
