Renting vs. buying: Understanding the language of mortgages - 2004-03-24
It's a phrase steady and dependable characters says in films: "I have a mortgage to pay."

For first-time buyers, the word mortgage invokes fear and conjures confusion.

"Sometime (people are) intimidated if they don't understand all of the language," said Marcy Krumbine, the home loan program coordinator of Collier County Extension Services. "I'm not talking English (or) Spanish."

The U.S. housing market shows no signs of abating as applications for new mortgages surged 25.6 percent last week, and refinancing activity soared nearly 40 percent.
