US lawmaker sees Fannie, Freddie bill as probable - 2004-03-09
House Financial Services Committee Chairman Michael Oxley revealed on Tuesday chances are strong for passage of a bill strengthening supervision of mortgage finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to rebuild confidence after an accounting scandal at Freddie Mac last year.

"There is a very good chance you'll see legislation get passed," Oxley told a conference of the Mortgage Bankers Association.

Mortgage loans, ethnicity studied - 2004-03-09
Fresno-area African-Americans and Hispanics got higher-interest loans when refinancing their homes more often than whites in 2002, according to a report looking into lending practices made public today.

Local mortgage lenders said that while they had not seen the report, they dismissed ethnicity as a factor in why some groups received a larger share of subprime loans.
