Mortgage hikes ahoy - 2004-04-02
Mortgages probably will become more expensive for millions of borrowers this week. The Bank of England's monetary policy committee* is expected to boost the UK base rate* from 4% to 4.25% on Thursday (8 April).

Further increases are also on the cards, according to economists, with rates expected to hit at least 5% before the end of the year.

Mortgage Giants Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac Bill May Die in 2004 - 2004-04-02
Legislation strengthening oversight of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the largest U.S. mortgage finance companies, may be delayed in the Senate.

The Senate Banking Committee voted 12-9 yesterday to approve a bill to give a new regulator power to alter capital standards, reject new lines of business and sell off assets should the government-chartered, publicly traded companies default on their combined debt of $1.7 trillion.
