Mortgage, home companies hurt by US payroll shock - 2004-04-02
Shares of companies in the mortgage and home building industries dropped Friday after the government said the U.S. economy created 308,000 jobs in March, sparking fears home financing costs would rise as a result.

The Labor Department jobs figure was about three times as much as economists had forecast.

Ms Ballard's husband was recently successfully treated for cancer. Their mortgage has been paid down through a critical insurance policy following his diagnosis.

They now plan to sell their current property and relocate, which will involve taking on a mortgage of around £50,000.

But Ms Ballard is concerned that it may be difficult to get a mortgage.
