Home ownership hits a high across North America - 2005-03-09
Home ownership has hit a new high across North America, but higher home prices will likely halt or reverse the trend, a couple of bank reports unveiled Tuesday predicted.

Helped by low mortgage rates and the affluence that generally comes with age, 67 per cent of Canadian households now own their homes, compared to 65.8 per cent four years ago, a Scotiabank Group report said. In the U.S., where mortgage interest is tax deductible, the rate has reached 69 per cent.

Homeowners can get tax breaks on mortgage refinance - 2005-03-09

If you refinance your mortgage, you may be able to write off the points disbursed for the new loan. However, points paid for refinancing must be deducted ratable over the life of the loan, rather than as a lump sum in the year they were paid.
