US housing shows unexpected strength - 2007-01-26
The US economy displayed signs of renewed strength on Friday as data showed unexpected growth in the housing sector and orders for big-ticket manufactured goods went up. Sales of newly built family homes climbed 4.8 per cent last month to 1.1m for the year amid signs that housebuilders were beginning to clean out excess inventory that has weighed down the construction sector.

Unable to find a buyer for his Beverly Hills, Calif., estate for close to a year, billionaire investor Kirk Kerkorian has slashed $7 million, or 28 percent, off the price. He's now asking just below $18 million for the 30-acre property. The gated estate features a Mediterranean style main house, two guest houses, two pools, two tennis courts and a putting green.
