Fremont Severs Ties With 8,000 Mortgage Brokers - 2007-01-30 Nonprime lender Fremont Investment and Loan, a unit of Fremont General Corp., declared that it was cutting ties with 8,000 mortgage brokers who it says were mainly responsible for a surge in early payment defaults last year. The Santa Monica, Calif.-based wholesale lender’s early payment defaults increased sixfold between 2005 and the middle of last year. Fremont originated $33 billion in mortgages last year.
