U.S. refinance mortgage activity rises - 2007-01-04
Mortgage applications in the U.S. recovered last week after two consecutive declines as purchases and refinance mortgage loans increased. The Mortgage Bankers Association declared Wednesday that its index of applications to acquire a home or refinance an existing loan climbed 3.6 percent, to 575.6, from the previous week.

30-year mortgage rate unchanged over week - 2007-01-04
The average rate for the benchmark 30-year fixed-rate mortgage stayed the same this week, according to Freddie Mac's weekly U.S. survey, released Thursday.
The mortgage's unchanged average rate of 6.18% for the week ending Jan. 4 is reflective of the mixed signals provided by recent economic indicators, according to Frank Nothaft, Freddie Mac's chief economist. The 30-year fixed-rate averaged 6.21% a year ago.
