Homeowners refinance mortgage to avoid adjustable-rate risks - 2007-01-08
Lawrence Jones was aware he was taking a chance on interest rates when he signed up for an adjustable-rate mortgage in 2002. In past months, thousands of homeowners like the Joneses are becoming more uncomfortable with the higher rates on their adjustable home loans and have been doing a refinance mortgage to the fixed-rate variety. The advantage is that they lock in an interest rate and a monthly payment. Financial planning becomes more predictable.

"Good year" ahead for U.S. economy, Kohn says - 2007-01-08
The U.S. economy should see a "good year" in 2007 with moderate growth and less inflation, declared an influential Federal Reserve official Donald Kohn on Monday. Kohn's views on the economic outlook are deemed important by other top Fed officials. Kohn has spent his entire career at the central bank, becoming a top Fed staffer under former chairman Alan Greenspan before he was appointed to the board.
