FBI: Mortgage fraud a growing problem - 2007-03-07
The number of mortgage fraud cases investigated by the FBI just about doubled the past three years, reflecting a problem that is "pervasive and growing," the bureau declared Wednesday in its annual report on financial crimes. The bureau said its mortgage fraud cases surged from 436 in 2003 to 818 in 2006, and acknowledged that its case load likely makes up a small piece of the problem. The FBI said mortgage fraud is difficult to track for a variety of reasons.

Beige Book: U.S. Economy Growing Modestly - 2007-03-07
The U.S. economy is growing at a slow pace, but some slowing has been seen in about a third of the country, the Federal Reserve declared Wednesday in its Beige Book. The bulk of 12 Federal Reserve banks "reported modest expansion in economic activity," the Beige Book declared. "But several districts noted some slowing," including New York, St. Louis, Boston and Dallas. The economy improved slightly in the Philadelphia region.
